Interesting that none of Calvary Chapel teams that won state titles are on the list. :-\

I believe Calvary is a private school.  This list shows public schools only.

not even close.  Azevedo coached that team and was paid as a professional coach.  you had a few well to do families that really supported the program.  Granted, they were a good team, but I am way more impressed with programs like Temecula, Northview and the 3 teams that won state titles.  When you can pull off a championship team from a mostly working class community, that is saying something.  Public schools with local talent.  Tough to win in such a big state.

Canyon Springs had a nice run in 1994. The team was stacked and finish 2nd behind CC

What makes a great team?

The longevity of Temecula Valley and Northview have to make them the top two I would think.

El Dorado had a good run in the early 80's at the state meet

1982 champs
1983 3rd
1986  2nd

The 2nd place 1986 team scored more points with three wrestlers ( all made finals ) than the 1982 state championship team with 5 wrestlers that all made it to semis. On a side note , the 1982 state championship team finished 2nd in league :)

Crazy as it sounds, it's harder for a super top heavy team to win league than finish high at Masters/State. You can ride a handful of beasts to a high finish at Masters/State, but if there's another team in the league that fills out the other 9-10 weight classes better, they can win the league.

Yeah, it’s true, but how often does that happen?
Maybe more back then?

Agreed...... our team was pretty solid overall, manged to set a then all time high of points at the equivalent of masters. We were all homegrown with no transfers and no "grey shirts" . I know that i, as well as a couple of teammates, started our senior years as 16 year olds .

As for the original question, no I don't think South Hills was the best of all time. They are the team that won a state title from SS and scored the most points. Even Santiago High scored more points though in 2013 and 2015 with 5th and 7th place finishers.

I would love to see the overall points scored at state by individual schools over the years. I have a feeling that Temecula and Northview fare pretty well.

See ya,

Al Bundy

Before the High School State Tournament started, the talent of the SS was evident from the rivalry of San Bernardino and El Camino JC’s. Every year those programs reloaded with local studs, and battled for the State Community College Title.

The point is, if you are going to rate all time SS public schools, there are teams from the 60’s and early 70’s that would make your list.

Comparing the Santiago score from 2013 to South Hills in 1981 is like comparing the price of gas between those years without adjusting for inflation.  In 1981 there were 13 weights and 25-man brackets vs 14 weights and 40 man brackets in 2013 - or 72% more competitors.  The top 6 teams in 1981 scored an average of 57.3 points and in 2013 they averaged 109.4.  There's just more points being scored because of the larger tournament now than there was 3 decades ago.

Oh cannonball , you are brilliant .
I didn’t know that 😂😂😂😂

So what makes them the best team of all time , because the way it is listed takes the highest team placing ( three public school championship teams ) and then the most points scored of those teams.
For the record , I don’t think my state championship team is the best as I
