Will there be a season?
« on: June 08, 2020, 09:51:09 am »
What are the chances there will not be a season?   Asking because we were planning to move out of state when my middle son graduates.  He’s going to be a jr this season and if it doesn’t look like there will be a season, we will probably leave now so he can wrestle his Jr year out of state.

I know a lot of coaches on here are 100% believing that we will have a season next winter but based on the requirements and safety codes set by the state/cif, I wouldn’t be suprised if we don’t have a season. It is horrible for many kids and the wrestling junkies that most of us are, but I had a disconcerting convo with a few AD’s that don’t paint a pretty picture on what it would take to bring wrestling back to anywhere near what we are used to. Hoping for the best though.

I talked with my AD about this at length the other day.  He seemed to believe that there WOULD be a season but it may be in the spring.  His thought was that they may move the sports schedules around- have the low risk sports like Golf, tennis and cross country in the fall and move the higher risk sports like football and wrestling to the spring (maybe even get rid of winter season altogether if they have to move all sports to winter/spring.  Everything right now is conjecture and changes by the day.  We may be able to start summer conditioning on July 6- no contact, groups of 10 (including coach) but at least it gets the kids going again.  I think the private schools are already ramping back up their athletic programs from what i have heard.

We should start to get some answers Wednesday. Possibly a shortened season in spring, focusing on league. We are lumped together with football and I don't see football being cancelled. imo

What’s going on Wednesday? I wonder if CIF would consider looking into the CCCAA proposal on returning to campus & juco sports .

From what I understand, Wednesday, CIF is supposed to have a meeting regarding the next school year.

I just read online that the CIF meeting starts today & runs through Thursday . I hear it’s regarding (hardship transfers , Physicals) but read nothing about a sports timetable for return.

Hearing from some gym owner friends of mine that offering jiu jitsu and wrestling will be problematic for gyms. I hope the CIF doesn't follow suit, but I am not optimistic.

Rob Wygod was interviewed in the LA Times I believe last Thursday or Friday and he commented that Football would that likely start in January 2021 followed by Basketball in February 2021.  No mentioned of wrestling.  Start not to look good for starting in November 2020. :'(

I'm hearing that insurance may be impossible to attain for the season.

Too early to tell anything for certain, but I'm not optimistic at this point.

Just to try and inject some hope in all of this:

From what I read in an interview from Wigod, CIF is very much planning on some sort of return to sports. The idea of starting football in winter was not necessarily the preferred scenario, but he brought it up to say that everything is on the table and they want to make it work somehow some way even if that means moving seasons. My guess is if football starts in winter, wrestling would move to spring. Or that each season would be only 4-6 weeks long played out between January and May 2021. He even mentioned that they would absolutely play without fans if that's what it takes.

I believe that if football is allowed to compete, then so will wrestling. So the fact that they are trying hard to make football return means they are working on wrestling as well, even if they don't mention it specifically. I don't see them making the argument that football players can be involved in 10 person pile-ups 50 times a football game and yet not let two people wrestle a few times a day.

These are just my hopeful, optimistic opinions.

Please remember that football and basketball are big money makers for the CIF-SS not so much wrestling.  Let's keep our fingers crossed. :-[

Exactly!

Plus wrestling is a carpool sport, whereas Basketball and Football tend to be bus sports...travel logistics are problematic.

What parent is going to drive at 6am to a weighin with 4-5 kids, only to have to sit in the parking lot the entire meet, if crowds aren't allowed yet.

Apparently Glassey didn’t have any issues with insurance, just got notification that his team camp in San Diego at end of July is being held...

I am not a gambling man, but my money would be on a condensed season with regional tournaments and no state meet. High risk sports besides football and wrestling  include lacrosse and stunt cheer. I don't see how they can have those and not have wrestling, and they will find a way to have  cheer and football.

On another note, anybody know an art teacher looking for a job  :)
