From what I hear, you guys are pros at running this tourney and the competition for boys is strong.
For us girls, however, I heard that only 6 girls where there last year. Any news on the growth on the girls' side of this tourney?

If girls dont register to compete it wont grow. Have a couple teams step up and say "we are going" and thats how you grow the girls division. An already succesful tournament doesnt need to "Cater" to the needs of the girls, however if 60 girls show up and want to wrestle I am sure they will be more than happy to accomodate. This is still a business and nobody is going to turn down 60 girls at $50 a pop or whatever the entry fee is! There are enough girls wrestling in California to make this a great event for girls too.

The issue is going to be the people who will say "its a SCWAY event so I am not going" or "its in Clovis and Im not going" or lastly "well I dont like (insert name here) so I am not taking my girls there". If just one of the "cliques" in girls wrestling rolls in with their 30-50 girls you will help them grow the girls side of the event.

I'm just 1 girl with a limited budget for gas, hotel, tournament fee, etc and as much as I believe changing the world starts with 1 individual, I can't afford to be that person right now; sounds like you have great ideas though. Please let me know if you find those 50 girls to go.

...WOW

THIS attitude is exactly what s holding up the growth of girls wrestling.

"If you build it they will come"... They HAVE built it.  Now its up to us coaches and parents to get our girls in the bracket.  I will be bringing a van full of ladies from Sacramento. No hotel needed. We drive up Sunday and wrestle. Its not that hard/expensive for those of us who want to see growth.

HOW ELSE are we supposed to grow the sport?

Mario –

You are a great ambassador for wrestling and I really appreciate what you and others are trying to do to build women’s wrestling in Northern California.  You have a ton of energy and are very enthusiastic.

I just don’t think that big tournaments with $45 entry fees like this are really going to help grow the girls side of wrestling.  Southern California is having much more success than we are in the North with numbers of girls, especially in the off-season, and they are providing smaller, less-expensive local tournaments for girls and getting more girls to come out.

$45 may not seem like a lot of money for a tournament registration if you are on the boys’ side and are going to get tough competition and the potential for several high-level matches.  However, for the girls, $45 is a lot to pay when you may end up getting only a match or two, and there’s a decent chance that the competitors won’t even be at the same level.  That is more than the entry fee for the Napa tournament last year, and Alex had 57 girls in her weight class with a guarantee that no girl would leave with less than 3 matches, and most girls had 5 matches or more over two days of wrestling.  Since it’s during the regular season, the school actually covers the costs associated with tournaments like Napa, but individuals are on their own to pay for off-season tournaments.  I took Alex to a western regional tournament a few years ago because it was nearby, but only one other girl showed up at her weight.  We paid $45, and Alex wrestled the same girl twice and beat her pretty quickly both times.  So we look at all of these pre-season tournaments with $45 entrance fees and have to decide if it’s better to just save the money and put it towards national tournaments at the end of the season.  Some people just can’t afford to do everything.

On the other side of the coin, I have three new girls who wrestled last year, but they are doing other sports right now and are not in wrestling shape.  They cannot afford $45 to get a match or two against upper-level girls who are wrestling year-round.   If there were smaller, local tournaments with $10 entry fees like the Girls Only Folkstyle Series in SoCal, I might have a better chance of getting them there.

Again, Mario, I have a ton of respect for you and what you are doing.  You and I have coached across the mat from each other for years as Alex has been wrestling your boys at SAWA tournaments.  On this issue, I think that offering smaller, more affordable tournaments is the best way to get more girls involved in the off-season and to really grow the sport.

Pete, I always appreciate your input.

Putting on a tournament is not a cheap thing to do, and a bit of risk comes with it. I don't know what the facility cost is for this tournament specifically, but I can tell you that renting the gym for Menlo College is $1500. A $10 entry fee with a hundred girls (we had 95 at Sierra) showing up would not even cover the cost of the gym. And that just the gym cost, not touching mats, tape, officials, awards, and the overall help and effort it takes to put an event together.

If we want equal treatment for our girls, we better be prepared to pay the equal tournament fees. EVERY "prestigious" boys event is more than 10 bucks. We keep asking for these things  to grow the sport, so when someone like Clovis West is trying to accommodate, I will make sure to bring a team down and show support. I'm far from "rich", but the $45 is partially to see my daughter wrestle (obviously), but a part of that fee is me knowing that I am contributing to the growthand the future of the sport (it's bigger than just me and my daughter).

With that being said, there are now 7 girls in my daughters weight.... Including a girl from Texas. Gonna be a good day of wrestling.

Mario –

I hope you did not take my post as critical toward you at all.  I know how much time and effort you put in for the kids, and I appreciate it.  I don’t even like posting publicly about anything that might be seen as negative.  I only decided to put these ideas out there publicly to answer the question you raised about what else can we do to grow the sport.

I agree that it’s nice to have a prestigious tournament or two for pre-season in order to get wrestlers from farther away and better competition, and I like the idea of a Menlo tournament where there is a women’s college program.  I think the issue is that almost all of the pre-season tournaments that are geared towards girls in Northern CA are trying to be high-level.  As a way to grow the sport, I’m suggesting a few pre-season tournaments at smaller venues that might work with us to keep the cost down.  Maybe we could even offer some unofficial match nights where girls can get matches but we don’t need refs and table help, etc.  I would be willing to help organize and run some of this next season if people are interested in this approach.  The girls who are serious and top-level are going to find matches and tournaments.  If we really want to grow the sport in our area, we need to reach those girls who are learning and give them less intimidating ways to get matches.

It’s great that there is 1 weight with 7 girls, but there are 5 weights with either 0 or 1 girl, and 4 weights with either 2 or 3 girls.  I'm suggesting ideas that might help bring out a few more girls.

Best of luck to Miranda and all of your girls this weekend!

Thanks Pete, I didn't take any of it personally towards me at all; I value your opinion.
