Tons of guys in the lighter and middle weights but gets a bit lean in the 182+ range. Will see around 30 state medalists out of the Southern Section in 2021, which is about their yearly average.

So here's a list, probably missing a couple guys, but based on last year's finish. It'll be interesting to see how heavy everyone is starting March 2021, as well as potential transfers:

106 Beau Mantanona (Palm Desert, 10): 1st SS, 3rd CA
106 Ethan Perryman (Temecula Valley, 11): 2nd SS, 5th CA
106 Santino Sanchez (San Marino, 11): 3rd SS, 4-2 Top 12 CA
106 Caleb Park (Calvary Chapel, 10): 7th CA, 3-2 Top 12 CA; beat Hendricks at state
106 Allan Hendricks (Centennial, 11): 4th SS, 3-2 CA

113 Zeth Romney (Chaminade, 11): 1st SS, 3rd CA
113 Luis Ortiz (Calvary Chapel, 12): 2nd SS, 8th CA
113 Justin Rodriguez (Palm Desert, 11): 3rd SS, 4-2 Top 12 CA
113 Devin Avedissian (Temecula Valley, 11): 4th SS, 4-2 Top 12 CA
113 Sean Solis (Fountain Valley, 11): 5th SS, 2-2 CA

120 Maxximus Martinez (Bosco, 10): 1st SS, 3rd CA

120 Zack Stone (Orange Lutheran, 12): 7th SS, 1-2 CA

And there will be a couple that grew leaps and bounds from last season.  I know one that will probably be on the podium at 132 this season that wasn’t a state qualifier last season.  😉

Top guys who didn't qualify for state in 2020 (state qualifier in 2019*):

120 Zack Stone (Orange Lutheran, 12)

At the risk of bumping him into anonymity in the "other returning state qualifiers", Zack Stone was 7th in SS last year.

I aim to please. Fixed Stone's spot.

There's usually a couple Southern dudes who go from not qualifying for state one year to placing in state the next (not including freshmen).

Last year, Perryman (Temecula) went from 2-2 SS to state 5th at 106. Salas (Bosco) never even wrestled at SS Masters (weight) and took state runner-up at 138 - he was always an elite guy so not a huge surprise. And Ojeda (San Jacinto) went from 2-3 SS to state 7th at heavies.

If I had to plunk down some dough 7 months before the season begins for no-state-to-state-podium, I'd go with McCown (Palm Desert - grow and get out of the crowded lighter weights), Salcedo (Bosco - hopefully he'll be back and the Bosco room is awesome at 126-152), Che (San Marino - very solid and rises with Wick tide), and Lopez (Centennial - he had wins over eventual SS runner-up and 4th last season).

Ill throw one into the mix. 285s. Capo Valley. Luke Meyer. He was in the low 20's as a sophomore with solid wins all season. Injured himself pretty good the week prior to CIF.

Royal.   Aidan Hansen. He was a masters qualifier as a freshman and last season.  Had a bad tournament last year.    He’s been working with his brother since the day after Masters (brother was a state placer the prior year 2019).  Hes turned a corner and I think he will surprise a lot of people now.   He is beating master qualifiers from last season at 145 and 160.

Shhhhhhhhhhh, coaches don’t brag about your studs.  Make people find out the hard way with lumps on their head.   Your chances of winning are a lot higher if your opponent thinks you are a smuck.  My own made up stat but I believe it anyway.  Both of my older brothers won state championships the first time they qualified for state.  It’s all about shhhh, sneak up and bite them.
